GOVERNMENT RUN AMUCK
January - March, 2000

When government, which our Founding Fathers envisioned as protector of individual freedom, turns against the citizens with unjust laws, unjust treatment, and other unjust actions, it has truly run amuck.

"NASA and Norway, in a joint project, launched a meteorological rocket to study the aurora borealis, but the Russian foreign Ministry never received notice of the launch due to a clerical error by an inexperienced staffer. As a result . . . Russia almost launched its nuclear missiles aimed at the United States. Only then-President Boris Yeltsin, not believing the West would attack, held off the launch. . . ."

"The bullets fired from standard issue M-16 rifles have always been made of lead. There are several reasons for this. Lead is considered a soft metal, therefore, it won't shatter on impact and is less likely to ricochet from its target -- both a plus. Its malleability also ensures that it won't damage the inner barrel (or bore) of the rifle. Tungsten, on the other hand, is the hardest known metal. It is ruinous to the bore of a gun. It also lacks lead's ballistic superiority." [So guess what your government is up to now. It wants to switch from lead to tungsten bullets. Why? Because the "greens" say tungsten is "environment friendly" and lead isn't. Your tax dollars at work. And by the way, tungsten is about twice as expensive and the U.S. has no reserves of the metal. China has 40% of the world's reserves. Tungsten bullets also require a whole lot more energy during manufacture, but the "greens" don't seem interested in that.]

John Stormer's book, None Dare Call It Education presents a frightening picture of America's educational system and the future of this country. The book documents "how education 'reforms' are undermining academics and traditional values." Here are a few quotations:
  • "We no longer see the teaching of facts and information as the primary function of education . . . building a new kind of people must be a part of education." (1989 Kansas Governor's Education Summit)
  • "From that 1989 education summit came federal laws: Goals 2000, School-to-Work, the New American Schools Act and the re-enactment and expansion of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965."
  • "The plan for Goals 2000 was developed by Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, Ira Magaziner, and Marc Tucker. . . It is a concept for dumbing down our schools and changing the character of the nation through behavior modification (a vital part of this plan). It moves away from an academically intensive curriculum to one that is integrated with vocational training, producing skilled manpower for the labor market. The economy will be controlled by the federal government by controlling our workforce and our schools." (Congressman Henry Hyde, in a "Dear Colleague" letter, March 1996.)
  • "[T]he law repeatedly used the words 'all students.' This does not mean all public [school] students. It does not mean all students who choose School-to-Work. It means all students [in public, private, and home schools] and that is made very clear in the law. . . ." (Phyllis Schlafly, addressing the 1996 National Conference of State Legislators meeting in Philadelphia.)
  • "After delivering [a] call for the destruction of free enterprise and individual freedom (laissez-faire) and the creation of a new culture, [Dr. Willard] Givens was named executive secretary of the NEA [National Education Association]. He held the post for 17 years."
  • "[H]ow would it be possible in history or government class to teach the vitally important foundational concept that man's rights come from God if God can't be mentioned in school?"

"Governments now own more than 40 percent of all the land in America. At the insistence of the administration, both Democrats and Republicans in Congress are creating a $2.8 billion annual slush fund to continue buying more private property. America, once a bright beacon of hope to the rest of the world, is selling its soul to the socialist ideal of 'public' ownership of land. . . . The land government does not yet own, it controls. Under the misguided pretense of protecting the environment, the government has quietly taken control of virtually every square inch of land in America. There is some kind of law in place that gives the government jurisdiction to prevent the use of any privately owned land. Consequently, the government already has the power to transform this beacon of capitalism into just another slave of socialism. And the government is greatly accelerating its use of its power. By taking control of public education, government has succeeded in teaching two generations that wolves and grizzly bears are more important than humans. By handing out tax dollars to Green Advocacy Groups, the government has employed an army of propagandists working in virtually every community to demonize the concept of private property, and hold up the principle of 'public' control.. By utilizing the power of taxation to force behavioral changes, government is penalizing free market initiative, and rewarding socialistic conformity. . . . This land is no longer our land -- individually. It is 'our' land -- collectively, just as it was in the Soviet Union, and still is in China and Cuba. It is 'our' land individually, only to the extent government permits us to use it. . . ."

"Before Kosovo, the U.N. could not act inside the borders of a sovereign nation without an invitation by that nation. At the 54th General Assembly, both the Secretary-General [of the U.N.] and the President of the United States said that national sovereignty would no longer prevent the United Nations from taking action to protect the 'security of the people' inside any nation. The term 'security of the people' signals a major shift in the philosophy of the U.N. And it has already occurred. Security of the people is not threatened only by armed conflict. The production of greenhouse gas that threatens global climate is seen by many U.N. delegates to threaten the 'security of the people.' . . ." According to a draft of the plan, a sophisticated monitoring system would be put in place to constantly track all computer activity, looking for 'suspicious patterns.' This would help keep tabs on the activities of the usual suspects: drug traffickers, child molesters and terrorists. . . But when the authorities have the power to track child porn, they have the power to track anything. It's a very short step to their reading our mail, investigating our medical records, and tracking commercial and financial transactions. . . ."
