THE GIELOW FAMILY FOUNDATION

Third Annual Meeting

The Doral Arrowwood Conference Resort, site of the 2002 Gielow Family Foundation annual meeting, is situated on 114 wooded acres in a quiet corner of Westchester County, New York. Available at the facility is a wide range of sports and recreation facilities including a full-size swim-through indoor-outdoor pool, squash, racquet ball, indoor/outdoor tennis, basketball, volleyball, a putting green, driving range, and the nine-hole "Blue Monster II" golf course. Also available is a complete assortment of aerobic and exercise equipment, steam room, saunas, and massage facilities.

Weather during the weekend was outstanding; clear sky, bright sun, comfortable temperature, and a light, pleasant breeze. We were delighted to take a walk through the stunning Donald M. Kendall Sculpture Gardens which surround the nearby Pepsico Headquarters building. The sculpture collection was begun in 1965 and now consists of 45 works by major twentieth century artists. It is exhibited on 168 acres of carefully-tended gardens, which include clipped hedges, trained trees, a lovely lake, pools, and fountains. A "Golden Path" of pebbles winds lazily about the site allowing visitors (the gardens are open to the public) a variety of views of the artwork and the natural beauty of the landscape.

THE GIELOW FAMILY FOUNDATION
Minutes of the Meeting
Saturday, May 4, 2002
Rye Brook, New York

Convened: 2:06 p.m.
Present:
Fred Gielow, President and Treasurer
Bob Gielow, Secretary
Jim Gielow, Member at Large
Tim Gielow, Member at Large
Minutes: The minutes of the last meeting (10-20-01) were read and approved. Copies of these minutes were distributed.
Treasurer's Report: The Treasurer's report, which had been mailed to board members prior to the meeting, was approved. Copies of the most recent credit union statement were distributed and reviewed.

Subject Discussion
GFF 2000 Tax Return
(Copies of several pages from the 2001 tax return were mailed to board members prior to the meeting.) It was noted that the price of tax preparation was surprisingly high.
Year-2001 Donations
The list of proposed donation recipients was discussed and approved. It was noted that the total amount is an increase over last year's donations (by about 20%).

It was suggested that the Cato Institute be considered as a future recipient of Foundation donations. It was moved and seconded to do so and the motion passed without objection.
Friend-of-Freedom Awards
Potential recipients of this year's Friend-of-Freedom Awards were discussed. It was agreed the 2002 winners will be David Horowitz and David Russell.

There was discussion about the importance of selecting Friend-of-Freedom recipients who are not widely known and recognized for their contributions to the cause of freedom. It was mentioned that the intensity of an individual's passion in support of the cause of freedom should be a factor considered in the selection of award winners.

Interest was expressed in considering individuals rather than groups or institutions as potential Friend-of-Freedom Award winners. Such a perspective would of course disqualify Hillsdale College, which was on the list of prospective winners.

Focus on Recipients
To better understand some of the organizations that receive donations from the Gielow Family Foundation, it was suggested that each board member might wish to focus attention on one or two particular recipients. Toward that end, Bob expressed interest in Accuracy in Media; Tim in America's Survival and National Vaccine Information Center, and Jim in the American Policy Foundation and Sovereignty International. The President will continue to monitor all recipients.
Our Next (2003) Meeting
The date, time, and location of our next meeting were discussed. It was hoped the meeting could be held in Bermuda over the 2003 Labor Day weekend. The president will look into travel arrangements sometime next year.
Other New Business
None.
Expense Accounts
Copies of a new expense account form were distributed. The per-mile reimbursement rate was increased from 30 to 35 cents.
Questions, Comments
None.
