"Global warming has become a euphemism for a political agenda. There is Socialism, Capitalism and Global Warmingism. It has become a religion run by fanatics reminiscent of the leaders of the darkest days of the Inquisition that nearly destroyed civil society only a few hundred years ago. We are not to question the great god of global warming. Those who do are separated from civil society and labeled as heretics. [. . .]

"The simple truth is there is no scientific consensus on global warming. In fact, as the media frenzy screams global warming, there are a growing number of scientists who are expressing their doubts. [. . .]

In 1998, The Oregon Institute of Science and Medicine (OISM) issued a petition for signature by atmospheric scientists saying there is no scientific evidence indicating that greenhouse gases cause global warming. That petition was signed by more than 17,000 scientists and leaders involved in the Issue. [. . .]

"[M]oney is in global warming because it's being pushed by a political agenda that wants power. Power in Washington. Power on the international stage. Power over economic development. Power over international monetary decisions. Power over energy. In short, power over the motor of the world. It's driven by literally thousands of large and small non-governmental organizations (NGOs) sanctioned by the United Nations, and implemented by a horde of bureaucrats, university academics and an ignorant but pliable news media. [. . .]

"Concludes Dr. Michaels in his landmark book, Meltdown, 'This junk science works for the fish movement, smart growth, sustaining development, rapid transit, wet lands, critical areas, water rights, property rights, fossil fuels, logging, justifying huge government and environmental land wildlife corridor buy ups with public money, changing regulatory laws, changing high court opinions, escalating enforcement codes, on and on.' It's all thrown into the offering plate as the taxpayer sits in the pew of the Church of Global Warming."

"Sadly, the goal of political correctness is not to educate students to become independent, morally upright, and involved citizens but rather to produce compliant comrades for the world community -- and to produce the socialist dream of a better society. This radical political agenda is a utopian vision, a longing for a time when all of society's ills and abuses will be eliminated. [. . .]

"A few years ago, the legendary, Oscar-winning screen actor Charlton Heston spoke at Harvard Law School, a modern bastion of political correctness. He forthrightly confronted the embracing of 'newspeak' at that college. In his speech, he outlined the gravity of the problem with political correctness and took a bold stand for restoring sanity to our public conversation. We offer his words as a fitting conclusion to our discussion:
"It scares me to death, and should scare you, too, that the superstition of political correctness rules the halls of reason. You are the best and the brightest. You, here in the fertile cradle of American academia, here in the castle of learning on the Charles River; you are the cream. But I submit that you, and your counterparts across the land, are the most socially conformed and politically silenced generation since Concord Bridge. And as long as you validate that . . . and abide it . . . you are -- by your grandfathers' standards -- cowards. . . . If you talk about race, it does not make you a racist. If you see distinctions between genders, it does not make you a sexist. If you think critically about a denomination, it does not make you anti-religion. If you accept but don't celebrate homosexuality, it does not make you a homophobe."

"Man's unique ability to ask ethical questions and make moral choices (rather than be ruled by instinct) makes us moral agents.

"Rights are the boundaries between moral agents. In order to possess rights, we must accept responsibilities to respect others' rights. We are justified in demanding our rights so long as we do not violate the rights of another moral agent. [. . .]

"Rights are a serious business. They are the linchpin of a free society. Without them, people would not be able to go about their business free from arbitrary interference by government. Rights offer a people freedom to convince others of different points of view without having to resort to violence and the resulting breakdown of civilization.

"The animal rights movement would allow people no more rights than rats or cockroaches. The real agenda of this movement is not to give rights to animals but to take rights from people -- to dictate our food, clothing, work, recreation, and whether we will discover new medications or die. [. . .]

"By pretending to extend rights to animals, which by nature are incapable of moral cognition, the Nazis ultimately annihilated the very concept of 'rights'. And just as the dogma of animal rights led to the destruction of human rights under Nazism, it leads to the destruction of human rights today. [. . .]

"I think the warped motivation behind this warped ideology is best expressed by [PETA's Ingrid] Newkirk herself: 'I am not a morose person, but I would rather not be here. I don't have any reverence for life, only for the entities themselves. I would rather see a blank space where I am. This will sound like fruitcake stuff again but at least I wouldn't be harming anything.' [. . .]

"If you don't have the answer yet to what animal rightists want, how about this quote from Michael W. Fox of the Humane Society, 'Man is the most dangerous, destructive, selfish, and unethical animal on earth.' Enough? Do you get their anti-human message? Or do you need one more quote from Wild Earth, 'If you haven't given voluntary human extinction much thought before, the idea of a world with no people in it may seem strange. But, if you give it a chance, I think you might agree that the extinction of Homo sapiens would mean survival for millions, if not billions, of Earth-dwelling species. . . Phasing out the human race will solve every problem on earth, social and environmental.'"

"As [Professor Steven] Farron [author of the book How Preferences Really Work,] correctly argues, a large part of the problem with 'affirmative action' is that it is shot through with lies -- beginning with the ridiculous euphemism itself. If the country wants to discriminate against whites, it should do so honestly and efficiently. This means using the best measures for evaluating candidates, and then boosting the scores of favored groups. The best evaluations, whether for college or on the job, are standardized tests. They predict performance better than interviews, recommendations, or past experience, but they highlight racial differences in ability. [. . .]

"Prof. Farron traces today's preferences back to John Kennedy's Executive Order No. 10,925 of March 8, 1961, in which government was to take 'affirmative action' to make sure people were hired without regard to race, creed, color, or national origin. Immediately, this directive produced exactly the opposite result. In his admiring biography of Kennedy published in 1965, Arthur Schlesinger wrote, 'The joke in Washington was that every department was sending posses out to recruit Negroes in order to avert the wrath of the White House.' In the two years ending in June 1963, the number of blacks in the top civil service grades jumped 88 percent. In other words, 'equal opportunity' was a lie from the very beginning. It always meant discrimination against whites. [. . .]

"From the 1960s to the 1980s, while whites were more or less somnolent, universities discriminated as they pleased. They drastically lowered standards for non-whites, and reserved university places, scholarships, and entire programs for them. Any non-white, whether descended from slaves or fresh from Mexico, could count on preferences.

"Admissions staff knew there would be a stink if people knew what they were doing, so they kept the qualifications of non-whites a dark secret even from their own faculties. The official lie was that standards were no lower for non-whites or that race was a 'tie-breaker' or gave only 'a slight edge'. When there was a leak from the admissions office at Georgetown Law School -- the differences in qualifications were spectacular -- the school made the staff sign a statement swearing to keep mum.

"The University of Michigan claimed it did not lower standards for blacks, and insisted that if they were dropping out, it was because of 'institutional racism'. This gave the administration an excuse to lather blacks with benefits even after they were on campus. Later, when Freedom of Information suits crowbarred the data out of Michigan, it turned out blacks were showing up with a combined SAT deficit of 200 to 250 points compared to whites."

"The 109th meeting of the Texas Academy of Science at Lamar University in Beaumont, March 3-5, 2006, was especially exciting [. . .] But there was a gravely disturbing side to that otherwise scientifically significant meeting, for I watched in amazement as a few hundred members of the Texas Academy of Science rose to their feet and gave a standing ovation to a speech that enthusiastically advocated the elimination of 90 percent of Earth's population by airborne Ebola. The speech was given by Dr. Eric R. Pianka, the University of Texas evolutionary ecologist and lizard expert, who the Academy named the 2006 Distinguished Texas Scientist. [. . .]

"One or Pianka's earliest points was a condemnation of anthropocentrism, or the idea that humankind occupies a privileged position in the Universe. He told a story about how a neighbor asked him what good the lizards are that he studies. He answered, 'What good are you?'!

"Pianka hammered his point home by exclaiming, 'We're no better than bacteria!' [. . .]

"Professor Pianka said the Earth, as we know it, will not survive without drastic measures. Then, and without presenting any data to justify this number, he asserted that the only feasible solution to saving the Earth is to reduce the population to 10 percent of the present number. [. . .]

"AIDS is not an efficient killer, he explained, because it is too slow. His favorite candidate for eliminating 90 percent of the world's population is airborne Ebola (Ebola Reston), because it is both highly lethal, and it kills in days instead of years. However, Professor Pianka did not mention that Ebola victims die a slow and torturous death, as the virus initiates a cascade of biological calamities inside the victim that eventually liquefy the internal organs. [. . .]

"How soon must the mass dying begin if Earth is to be saved? Apparently fairly soon, for Pianka suggested he might be around when the killer disease goes to work. [. . .]

"When Pianka finished his remarks, the audience applauded. It wasn't merely a smattering of polite clapping that audiences diplomatically reserve for poor or boring speakers. It was a loud, vigorous, and enthusiastic applause."

"'Religion . . . is more needed in democratic republics than in any other,' wrote Alexis de Tocqueville. The untrammelled individual autonomy fostered by U.S.-style governance needs to be balanced by a sense of responsibility and communal loyalty. Only when religious parameters discipline personal appetites and imbue citizens with authentic concern for others will a people be able to live entirely free, without despots over them, Tocqueville concludes.

"Thankfully, some invisible spring (which has gone dry in Europe and other places) keeps refilling American breasts with religious convictions and truths. As early as just a few decades after our nation's founding, people like Ralph Waldo Emerson were gloomily predicting the death of Christian principle in America. Yet everyday believers have repeatedly confounded the authorities -- religious passion remains alive and well in the contemporary United States. To take just one indicator: sales of religious books have jumped 20 percent in the last five years (while sales of all other books have fallen 7 percent over that same period).

"Of course, enemies of religion cite this bubbling passion as something to fear in American society. They obsessively warn that our nation is in danger of being swept by a dark 'religious fundamentalism'. However, the facts of daily life in the U.S. bear out Tocqueville's judgment that deep and yeasty religious feeling is a good thing in a free culture like ours. Evidence [. . .] indicates that religious believers continue, right to the present day, to do most of the altruistic work that keeps our communities healthy -- everything from blood donation, to philanthropy, to military service, to childraising, to volunteer work."

"Jimmy Massey is the kind of soldier media folk often search out. The discharged Marine is a leader of 'Iraq Veterans Against the War.' He has been a star of Cindy Sheehan's anti-war tour and left-wing blogs and radio programs. His book Kill, Kill, Kill was published in France, and is being adapted for film. [. . .]

"Massey claims he and members of his unit intentionally killed more than 30 unarmed civilians in Iraq, including women and small children, and that he was just one of many Marines carrying out such attacks. Massey also admits to mental problems -- for which he was discharged from the service -- and to taking a host of medications to handle them. But that hasn't stopped reporters for the Associated Press, USA Today, the National Catholic Reporter, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Vanity Fair, and many other media outlets from quoting him authoritatively without corroborating his grave charges. [. . .]

The only problem is, it's all rubbish. It so happens there were five reporters embedded with Massey's Marine unit during the time he asserts they were marauding through Iraq. One of them, Ron Harris of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, got wind of Massey's claims, checked them out, then revealed that eyewitness accounts show Massey's stories are fabrications or mythifications of real events.

"This, however, has hardly slowed Massey's lionization among Iraq critics. DVDs of his anti-military testimony are for sale on the Web for $100. At last report, he was a star of December's Perdana Global Peace Forum in Malaysia. Meanwhile, few to none of the hundreds of news reports about Massey's murderous Marines have been retracted."

"Those who know what to look for these days should have no trouble recognizing the reality of an ongoing, behind-the-scenes effort to destroy the sovereignty of this country. As the process has accelerated during the past 12 years (the NAFTA [North American Free Trade Agreement] era), we sometimes find open admissions by the archglobalists themselves. [. . .]

"Last year the CFR [Council on Foreign Relations] published Building a North American Community, which openly called for dissolving the borders between Canada, the United States, and Mexico and establishing 'regional governance.' [. . .]

"'States,' [CFR president Richard Haass] said, 'must be prepared to cede some sovereignty to world bodies if the international system is to function. This is already taking place in the trade realm.' [. . .]

"In [a] recent article, Haass identifies one of the principles of national sovereignty that must be ceded: 'the ability to control what crosses borders in either direction.' (He does not discuss any other principles.) If even this one principle of sovereignty is ceded, we will no longer be able to call ourselves an autonomous country: we will have to bow to trade-community rules in terms of drug laws (both those that are currently legal as well as illegal), abandon national security efforts and allow others to determine our citizenship requirements because we won't be able to control immigration, give up rules that are intended to keep our foods and beverages safe, and forgo traffic and highway safety because we will not be able to control who is allowed to drive here or the safety of the vehicles they are driving. And this is just a partial list of negatives that will accrue by ceding just one little part of our sovereignty."

"There are tens of thousands of cases of statutory rape each year in California, which has the highest teen pregnancy rate in the nation. But if some 25-year-old predator lures your underage daughter into a sexual relationship and gets her pregnant, he has a very good chance of escaping prosecution in California. All he has to do is get her down to a Planned Parenthood abortion mill, where the baby -- excuse me, 'product of conception' -- can be scraped, burned, or sucked out, without you ever being notified or consulted. What's more, even though the predator has committed a criminal act in having sex with your daughter and the 'health provider' is required by law to report such instances of statutory rape, the rapist knows that Planned Parenthood personnel can be trusted to cover for him. [. . .]

"And [the Planned Parenthood people] don't tell anybody, not even the law enforcement authorities they are mandated to tell. [. . .]

"Most states in our nation have laws on the books that either prohibit tattooing and body piercing of minors, or at least require proof of parental consent for these procedures. Likewise, schools and hospital emergency rooms must obtain parental consent before administering so much as an aspirin to a child. If a teacher wants to take the students on a field trip, again, parental permission is required. Minors cannot legally buy alcoholic beverages, cigarettes, or chewing tobacco. So why is there such a huge disconnect when it comes to abortion for minor girls? Can any sensible person really believe that having an abortion is less serious, less dangerous, less emotionally and physically traumatic than taking an aspirin or piercing an ear, and therefore, less deserving of parental involvement?"

"Sustainable Development has become a 'buzz' term that refers to a political agenda, rather than an objectively sustainable form of development. Specifically, it refers to an initiative of the United Nations called the U.N. Sustainable Development Agenda 21, the most comprehensive statement of a political ideology that is being progressively infused into every level of government in America. [. . .]

"Agenda 21 was unveiled in 1992 during the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, commonly known as the Rio Earth Summit, where more than 178 nations adopted Agenda 21, and pledged to evaluate progress made in implementing the plan every five years thereafter. President George H. W. Bush was the signatory for the United States.

"Although Congress never authorized the implementation of Agenda 21, in 1993, President Bill Clinton established, by Executive Order, the President's Council on Sustainable Development (PCSD) for the purpose of implementing Agenda 21 in the United States. The PCSD operated through 1999, but its actions to promote Sustainable Development have taken root, and now exert an increasing influence in communities across America. [. . .]

The authors of Agenda 21 have said it will affect every area of life, grouped according to three objectives: Equity, Economy, and Environment. By defining these terms vaguely, a litany of abuse has resulted. [. . .]

"[I]n order to achieve their objectives, [the authors of Agenda 21] call for a shift in attitudes, which can be seen in the educational programs developed by its proponents. This is the premise of Sustainable Development: That individual human wants, needs, and desires are to be conformed to the views and dictates of planners. Harvey Ruvin, Vice Chair of the International Council on Local Environmental Initiatives, and Clerk of the Circuit and County Court in Miami-Dade County, Florida, has said that 'individual rights will have to take a back seat to the collective' in the process of implementing Sustainable Development. [. . .]

"Sustainable Development is ostensibly concerned with the environment; it is more concerned with restructuring the governmental system of the world's nations so that all the people of the world will be the subjects of a global collective. Many of its proposed implementation strategies require the surrender of unalienable rights. [. . .]

"Sustainable Development is restructuring our lives, and is targeting our children through an educational regime that seeks to develop collectivist attitudes, values, and beliefs. Sustainable development documents expressly call for the elimination of private property and the freedom that private property supports. It supplants long-standing State laws, and causes irreparable harm to our economy and our society. If individual members of our society do nothing, the continuing loss of liberty will result in increasing social confusion and discord, rising resource shortages, financial decay, and a dimming future for us and our posterity."

-- Excerpts from "Understanding Sustainable Development -- Agenda 21 -- A guide for Public Officials," a booklet prepared by Freedom 21 Santa Cruz, PO Box 3330, Freedom, California 95019, 2005, pages 4-6, 8, 10, 21. Phone: 831-684-2232. Website.

"As writer Mark Steyn glumly put it in The New Criterion, 'Much of what we loosely call the Western world will not survive this century, and much of it will effectively disappear within our lifetimes, including many if not most Western European countries.' [. . .]

Sociologist Ben Wattenberg, author of Fewer: How the New Demography of Depopulation Will Shape Our Future, puts this [into] historical perspective. 'Never in the last 650 years, since the time of the Black Plague, have birth and fertility rates fallen so far, so fast, so low, for so long, in so many places.' [. . .]

"World magazine's Gene Edward Veith sums it up this way: 'Why the population decline? The worldwide collapse of what are, literally, family values. Thanks to contraceptive technology, sex has become separated from childbearing. With women pursuing careers of their own and men getting sex without the responsibility of marriage, why bother with children? For many women and men, pregnancy has become an unpleasant side effect, something to prevent with contraceptives or easily treat with a trip to the abortion clinic.'

"Abortion comes in for particular blame in Veith's view. 'The dirty little secret of the population implosion, one seldom mentioned by demographers, is that the world is aborting its future generations,' he says. [. . .] 'In Russia, the average woman may have as many as four abortions in her lifetime;' he says. 'There are two abortions for every live birth. That is to say, Russians kill two thirds of their children before they are born.' [. . .]

"Dwindling populations have always signaled cultural decline, with less creativity, energy, and vitality on every level of society. [. . .]

"[S]ays [author and journalist James P.] Gannon, 'Abortion, birth control, acceptance of gay marriage and casual sex are driving the trend.'"

"[T]he [Bush] Administration made a fatal error when it agreed to let the UN create a permanent standing body called the 'Internet Governance Forum' (IGF), which intends to keep up a long-term campaign to finally achieve UN control over the Internet.

"And what will happen to the free Internet once the UN takes control? [. . .] [W]hat censorship can we expect? Here's a good example: Hate talk. [. . .]

"Real hate crimes, according to Red China, Red Cuba, Red Vietnam, and their ilk, are words spoken against the international proletariat. In other words, talk against communist oppression is hate talk.

"In addition, attacks on unions; radical environmentalism; gun control; sustainable development and abortion are considered divisive and hateful. Support of [the] Christian religion and the Ten Commandments [is] radical and divisive. Advocating limited government control over our lives is divisive and counterproductive -- hateful. Anything uttered pro-Israel is hateful. Any criticism of Islamic fundamentalism is hateful. [. . .]

"The Internet is the voice of freedom in the United States. It's the tool that has enabled the forces of freedom to circumvent the stranglehold of the elite media. It has become a way to issue alerts to stop or expose pending legislation. It is a way to search for documents. Parents have used the Internet effectively to expose globalist school curriculum and gain access to secret evaluation tests used on their children. [. . .]

"Keep in mind, too, that the title of the Tunis UN summit, which openly seeks Internet control, was the 'World Summit on the Information Society.' Its purpose, besides grabbing control of the Internet, was to set internationally 'acceptable boundaries to freedom of expression.' Acceptable to whom? Control of the Internet by any government force puts it up for grabs by whatever gang of thugs is in control."

"'What is at stake is nothing less than the survival of our civilization," [former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu said [about a week after September 11, 2001]. 'There may be some who would have thought a week ago that to talk in these apocalyptic terms about the battle against international terrorism was to engage in reckless exaggeration. No longer.' [. . .]

"'The first and most crucial thing to understand is this: There is no international terrorism without the support of sovereign states,' he said. 'Terrorists are not suspended in mid-air. They train, arm and indoctrinate their killers from within safe havens on territory provided by terrorist states. Often these regimes provide the terrorists with intelligence, money and operational assistance, dispatching them to serve as deadly proxies to wage a hidden war against more powerful enemies. These regimes mount a worldwide propaganda campaign to legitimize terror, besmirching its victims and exculpating its practitioners. . . . Take away all this state support, and the entire scaffolding of international terrorism will collapse into the dust.' [. . .]

"'The international terrorist network is thus based on regimes - Iran, Iraq, Syria, Taliban Afghanistan, Yasser Arafar's Palestinian Authority and several other Arab regimes such as the Sudan,' he said. [. . .]

"[The] terrorism that hit the U.S. four years ago on Sept. 11 I believe is the same terror[ism] that earlier resulted in the shootdown of TWA Flight 800 over New York and destroyed the federal building in Oklahoma City. The U.S. government has deliberately covered up the overwhelming evidence of the Islamic terror connection in earlier attacks on our country, probably because of the impact it might have on the phony, so-called 'peace process' in the Middle East. [. . .]

"We are vulnerable to continued terror attacks. But these attacks are not designed to defeat us militarily. They are designed to break our will. They are designed to sow seeds of confusion in a culture that has already lost its own religious underpinnings and moral framework. They are designed, in Marxist theory, to 'heighten the contradictions of capitalism' -- or, as another generation of communists explained it, to 'bring the war home.' That was how we lost a war to little Vietnam."

"PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, is the largest, wealthiest and most high-profile group of animal 'rights' extremists in the world. [. . .]

"If you look past all the puppies, propaganda and PR stunts, PETA'S agenda won't improve animal welfare, but abolish it.

"If PETA has its way, there will be no hunting and therefore no wildlife conservation, no wetlands protection or habitat development. The subsequent disease, mass starvation and die-off of animals are unthinkable. [. . .]

"Nobody invests more money in wildlife conservation than hunters. Yet we are the targets of these extremists, despite our unwavering commitment to land for wildlife research, habitat conservation, species protection and game law enforcement. In contrast, PETA'S so-called 'animal shelters' have become killing fields for dogs and cats. At its Norfolk, Va., headquarters, PETA has reportedly killed more than 10,000 dogs and cats since 1998.

"Yet many Americans don't know that PETA wants much more than to take a fishing pole from every child's hand, ban milk from their breakfasts and shut down all their circuses, zoos and aquariums. PETA wants much more than to take away seeing-eye dogs from the blind and to take away bomb-sniffing dogs from our airports.

"PETA wants to stop medical advancements that use animal research in any way. That would eliminate almost every major medical achievement in the 20th century. If PETA has its way, there will be no treatment for diabetes, heart disease, infection or chronic pain. There will be no vaccines, chemotherapy, organ transplants or bypass surgery.

"And if PETA has its way, there may never be a cure for AIDS, Alzheimer's, cancer, cystic fibrosis, multiple sclerosis or any other human suffering. [. . .]

"PETA has contributed to movements like the Earth Liberation Front (ELF) and the Animal Liberation Front (ALF), which have committed a thousand firebomb attacks and caused more than $110 million in property damage.

"This eco-terrorism movement is so dangerous, the FBI has declared it America's No. 1 domestic terrorist threat. [. . .]

"One of PETA's handouts at elementary schools shows a wild-eyed mommy in her bloody apron hacking away at a live rabbit with a butcher knife. The headline reads: 'YOUR MOMMY KILLS ANIMALS!' Another PETA comic book called "A Rat's life" encourages kids to pet rats. "The icon of college women's studies courses, Simone de Beauvoir, opined that 'marriage is an obscene bourgeois institution.' Easy divorce became a primary goal of the feminist liberation movement. Robin Morgan, one of the founders of Ms. Magazine, said that marriage is 'a slavery-like practice' and that 'we can't destroy the inequities between men and women until we destroy marriage.' Three-fourths of divorces are now unilaterally initiated by wives without any requirement to allege that the cast-off husband committed any fault.

"As divorces became easy to get, the feminists suddenly did a total about-face in their demand that fathers share equally in child care. Upon divorce, mothers demand total legal and physical custody and control of their children, arguing that only a mother is capable of providing their proper care and upbringing, and a father's only function is to provide a paycheck. Gone are the demands that the father change diapers or tend to a sick child. Feminists want the father out of sight except maybe for a few hours a month of visitation at her discretion. [. . .]

"It is settled law in the United States that parents (note the plural) have a fundamental right to the care, custody and control of the upbringing of their children. But feminists have persuaded family courts, upon divorce, to acquiesce in feminist demands that the mother typically be given 80% to 100% of those fundamental rights that belonged to both parents before divorce. [. . .]

"Beginning in the mid-1980s, the feminists used their political clout to get Congress to pass draconian post-divorce support-enforcement laws that use the full power of government to give the divorced mother cash income proportional to the percentage of custody time she persuades the court to award, but unrelated to what she spends for the children or to her willingness to allow the father to see his children.

"Since the father typically has higher income than the mother, giving near-total custody to the mother enables the states to maximize transfer payments and thereby collect bigger cash bonuses from the federal government. When fathers appeal to family courts for equal time with their children, they are opposed by a large industry of lawyers, psychologists, custody evaluators, domestic-violence agitators, and government bureaucrats who make their living out of denying fathers their fundamental rights. [. . .]

"[D]ivorced fathers win child custody of their children only 15% of the time, and U.S. government figures show that the majority of perpetrators of child abuse and neglect are female."

"[T]he United States was designed as a 'republic,' not a 'democracy' . . . [T]he Constitution makes no mention of 'democracy' (nor does the Declaration of Independence). The Constitution does say (Article IV, Section 4): 'The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government.' Indeed, the more 'democratic' the U.S. has become, the more our liberty and economy have suffered. We took a big hit in 1913, for instance, when the federal income tax amendment was ratified, along with popular election of senators.

"In order to insert the personal income tax into the body politic, assurances were given that the top tax bracket of 7 percent would never be raised. Yet, within a mere eight years, the progressive nature of the income tax, coupled with the ancient ruse of supposedly soaking only the rich, had driven the top bracket rate to 77 percent.

"As James Madison, the 'Father of the Constitution,' noted in The Federalist Papers (Number 10, where he also explained why republics are preferable to democracies), there is an inevitable 'temptation' when collecting taxes for the majority to 'trample on the rules of justice' against the minority. The results bear out Madison's prescience: in 1913, federal spending was but 2.5 percent of the Gross National Product; it is about 10 times that today."

"[T]he UN is a shamefully squalid organization whose corruption is almost impossible to exaggerate. If you think -- as the media and the left do in this country -- that Iraq is a God-awful mess (which it's not), then try being the Balkans or Sudan or even Cyprus or anywhere where the problem's been left to the United Nations. If you don't want to bulk up your pension by skimming the Oil-for-Food program, no need to worry. Whatever your bag, the UN can find somewhere that suits -- in West Africa, it's Sex-for-Food, with aid workers demanding sexual services from locals as young as four; in Cambodia, it's drug dealing; in Kenya, it's the refugee extortion racket; in the Balkans, sex slaves. On a UN peace mission, everyone gets his piece.

"Didier Bourguet, a UN staffer in Congo and the Central African Republic, enjoyed the pleasures of 12-year-old girls, and as a result is now on trial in France. His lawyer has said he was part of a UN pedophile network operating from Africa to southeast Asia. But has anyone read anything about that? The merest glimpse of a U.S. servicewoman leading an Abu Ghraib inmate around with girlie knickers on his head was enough to prompt calls for Donald Rumsfeld's resignation, and for Ted Kennedy to charge that Saddam's torture chambers were now open 'under new management.' But systemic UN child sex in at least 50 percent of their missions? The transnational morality set can barely stifle their yawns. If you're going to sexually assault prepubescent girls, make sure you're wearing a blue helmet."

"Researchers at the University of Sydney have analyzed 29 separate studies on the subject [of Ritalin] and have concluded that there is indication that some Ritalin users may experience slow or even stunted growth. [. . .]

"Two of the studies [. . .] suggest that children who experience nausea and vomiting as an early side effect of Ritalin may be uniquely vulnerable to slow growth. [. . .] [T]his small sub group of Ritalin users ended up more than two inches shorter than other Ritalin users.

"Ritalin, of course, is the drug of choice give to children diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The drug is now administered to over 10 million American children, beginning as early as four years old. [. . .]

"Yet, as usage continues to rise, Dr. Fred Baughman, a leading critic of ADHD theory, warns that there still is no valid research to prove that ADHD even exists! [. . .] Medical researchers charge that ADHD does not meet the definition of a disease or syndrome or anything organic or biologic. Instead, Baughman charges, ADHD was literally invented by the American Psychiatric Association (APA).

"The explosion of new ADHD cases in the 1990s, which continues today, can be traced directly to a 1991 change in eligibility for federal education grants allowing schools to be paid $400 in annual grants for each child diagnosed with ADHD [. . . .]

"Ritalin: it will stunt your child's growth; shrink their brain; cause violent mood swings and cause addiction, just to treat a disease that doesn't exist. And Americans wonder what's wrong with public education."

"Multiculturalism is a poison pill prepared by people who hate America. The poison lies in the fact that every race and ethnic group in the world is to be honored except Caucasians of European descent. Any such showing of pride is to be labeled 'Nazism' or 'white supremacy.'

"Both charges are bosh, of course. As part of the multicultural argument, it is often claimed that the United States has always been multicultural and multilingual. That is true only in a technical sense. Nearly all of the early immigrants were from Europe -- mostly northern Europe, mostly Protestant Christians -- and most all aspired to learn English if they didn't know it. [. . .]

"It is easy to forget in today's Orwellian world that the 13 original colonies, which became the 13 states, were all English colonies established by Great Britain. They were peopled largely by English, Irish, Scots and Welsh, with a smattering of Germans, Dutch, and French Huguenots. It is also easy to forget that these people lived in English colonies under English laws for nearly 169 years before they declared their independence. [. . .]

"It's tragic that Native Americans living in the Stone Age were overwhelmed by a flood of Immigrants who were technologically advanced. It is unfortunate that slavery was introduced to the nation. It's unfortunate that after the War Between the States, greedy industrialists in the North opened the floodgates to immigration, in part to settle the lands they had stolen from the American people. It's doubly unfortunate that foolish liberals in the United States in 1965 passed an immigration law that opened the doors to practically everyone except Europeans. [. . .]

"If American children don't grow up proud of their country and its history and their heritage, then I don't see how they are going to preserve it. I assume most Americans still think it is worth preserving. Or do most Americans see it only as a huge shopping mall between the Atlantic and the Pacific?"

"To understand any political ideology, one must understand what most animates it. For the Left, it is hatred of inequality. As noted in a previous column, the Left hates inequality even more than it hates evil. Or perhaps more accurately, for the Left, inequality is the ultimate evil. [. . .]

"For those on the Left, law, and everything else, is subservient to equality.

"Everyone, whether able to articulate it or not, has a values system. The trick -- often a difficult trick -- is to isolate precisely what those values are. The Left is now, as it has always been, the child of the French Revolution and of Karl Marx. For both, the greatest evil is not injustice, not cruelty, not even murder; it is inequality. [. . .]

"For liberals, judging and news reporting are vehicles to achieving equality and other goals of 'social justice.' The New York Times put Abu Ghraib prison abuse stories on its front page for 30 consecutive days not because it merited such attention but to further its anti-war and anti-Bush politics.

"Yet another example is education. The Left rejects the notion that the primary purpose of education, whether middle school, high school or college, is simply to educate young people. The purpose is to promote the values the Left believes in, from environmentalism to sex education to multiculturalism and its understanding of tolerance."

"NAFTA has worked remarkably well for the elite in the U.S. and Mexico, but has been a resounding dud for the vast majority of workers in both countries. [. . .] While productivity in Mexico surged by 50 percent between 1994 and 2001, manufacturing wages in that country fell by 11 percent (and, in real terms, earnings were lower than they were in 1981). According to the World Bank, 51 percent of Mexicans lived in poverty in 1994 when NAFTA went into effect. Four years later 58 percent of Mexicans lived below the poverty line, while 82 percent of those in rural areas could be classified as poor.

"Under NAFTA, wages for workers in the maquiladoras have fallen, and jobs that left the U.S. to take advantage of lower wage Mexican labor are now leaving Mexico in pursuit of still lower wage labor in China and other countries. Meanwhile American agricultural exports to Mexico (often harvested by illegal Mexican migrants in the U.S.) have wrought havoc on small subsistence farmers in Mexico. Many of these displaced farmers have migrated to the cities, or have found their way across the border to the U.S.

"On our side of the border the results have not been any better. NAFTA was sold to American workers as a treaty that would allow millions of U.S. workers who were willing to retrain themselves to move into higher value added jobs, while the migration of labor intensive jobs to Mexico would provide economic sustenance and reduce the flow of Mexican workers headed north. Neither promise has been fulfilled. [. . .]

"Illegal immigration to the United States from Mexico has exploded since NAFTA went into effect. The Pew Hispanic Center estimates that since the implementation of NAFTA, more than 7 million illegal aliens have settled in the U.S. Mexico accounts for 57 percent of those in the U.S. illegally, while all of Latin America combined accounts for 81 percent of the illegal immigrant population of the U.S. Moreover, the numbers of illegal aliens from Mexico are increasing, not decreasing, after more than a decade of free trade."

"The phrase "white flight" is completely misleading. All over the world and throughout history, groups have collected together with people like themselves, whether by race, income, education, religion or any number of other characteristics.

"A century or so ago, when Polish immigrants began moving into various Detroit neighborhoods, blacks began moving out.

"When European Jewish immigrants began arriving in the United States and some began moving into German Jewish neighborhoods in Chicago, the German Jews began moving out. Similar patterns have been found among all sorts of groups. [. . .]

"The fact that people sort themselves out in many ways is not usually a big problem -- except to those people who cannot feel fulfilled unless they are telling other people what to do. Government programs to unsort people who have sorted themselves out have produced one social disaster after another.

"The decades-long attempts to mix black and white children through school busing produced no real educational benefits, but much racial polarization and ill will. The same thing continues to be done in colleges in the name of 'diversity' -- and with the same bad results.

"Among the most unconscionable attempts to unsort people who have sorted themselves out by behavior are government programs to relocate people into neighborhoods where they could not afford to live without subsidies. Often the people in those neighborhoods have sacrificed for years in order to be able to live where they could raise their children in decent surroundings and not have to live in fear of hoodlums -- only to have the government import the bad neighbors and hoodlums they have tried so hard to escape."

"Since the 1960s, with few exceptions, on the greatest questions of good and evil, the Left has either been neutral toward or actively supported evil. The Left could not identify communism as evil; has been neutral toward or actually supported the anti-democratic pro-terrorist Palestinians against the liberal democracy called Israel; and has found it impossible to support the war for Democracy and against an Arab-Muslim enemy in Iraq as evil as any fascist the Left ever claimed to hate. [. . .]

"That most Democratic Party leaders, union leaders, gay leaders, feminists, professors, editorial writers and news reporters have called for an American withdrawal and labeled this most moral of wars 'immoral' is a permanent stain on their reputations. [. . .]

"The Left continues to label the war for Iraqi democracy 'immoral' while praising the tyrant of Cuba.

"Leftists do so for the same reason they admired Ho Chi Minh and Mao Tse-tung and condemned American arms as the greatest threat to world peace during and after the Cold War. The Left 'does not know the difference between good and evil.' And that is why it is worth nothing."

"[After] Europeans stopped going to church, they stopped having children, having lost the spiritual impetus for procreation. Demographic winter set in. Then the Muslims moved in. [. . .] A glimpse of Europe's future may be seen in the recent Muslim riots around Paris. Besides burning cars, the rioters firebombed churches and synagogues.

"For the past five years, Europe has experienced a wave of anti-Semitism not seen since the Second World War. It's not evangelicals beating Jews in the streets of Paris, attacking Jewish day schools and kosher restaurants, and vandalizing Jewish cemeteries.

"Twenty years ago, Joshua O. Haberman, a reform rabbi, wrote an article entitled, 'The Bible Belt Is America's Safety Belt.' It's what keeps us from careening into a moral abyss of death-on-demand, sex divorced from values, a Roman orgy and demolition derby passing as entertainment, drugs used to fill lives devoid of meaning, and a generation of strutting savages in Calvin Kleins."

"What those who despise President George W .Bush -- and there are many, judging by the reaction to the last election -- don't get is that any philosophy or political vision that lacks the concept of evil will not fly with a great many folks in America.

"Liberals tend to explain evil in the world as the product of bad luck, disease and other impersonal forces [. . .] assault, battery, robbery, burglary, theft, laziness, recklessness and the like -- these are all due to sad circumstances in the lives of the offenders. [. . .] It's always in the stars, not in ourselves, that the fault lies.

""[. . .] This is why when President Bush had the gall to use the phrase 'axis of evil,' and when Ronald Reagan earlier referred to the Soviet Union as 'the evil empire,' liberals smugly dismissed it all as shallow moralizing unworthy of sophisticated folks everywhere. [. . .]

"I am convinced that one of the main reasons [Bush] won the election is that many Americans simply could not abide some of Kerry's supporters, academics and other intellectuals who scoff at the belief that there are morally right and wrong actions that people engage in throughout the world.

"They supported Bush, who at least appears to acknowledge an elementary fact about human life: some folks act badly and are responsible for their actions, while others act decently and should be recognized. Not until liberals produce a philosophical-political vision that makes room for this position will they stop being at odds with the bulk of Americans."
