Quickies "All six 'undecided voters' who questioned Democratic presidential candidates during the Nov. 15 debate on CNN have been identified as Democratic activists, according to Directorblue.blogspot.com. Quickies "Haitian immigrants and their self-appointed spokesmen threw a fit last month after scientific research revealed that the strain of the AIDS virus being spread around the U.S. was brought here by a Haitian immigrant in 1969. [. . .] 'People are upset,' said Lesly Jacques, director of Radio Haiti Amerique in south Florida. 'Is it politically motivated?' she wondered. [. . .] Leftwingers at The Progressive immediately took up the Haitian immigrants' cause, claiming the scientific evidence could be wrong, and charging that Christian missionaries from Africa could have been the ones bringing AIDS to the U.S. from Africa."

Dr. John McDonald, an apparently rational school administrator, pointed out that the alleged 'noose' was actually a device used by surgeons to give traction to fracture patients."

Quickies "[A] car was driving at night with no headlights on, and in the dark, it was impossible to see who was driving it. When the policeman pulled the car over, a black driver got out and, when the policeman told him that he was driving without his lights on, the driver said, 'You only pulled me over because I am black!' [. . .] Later, when [a] journalist asked the cop how often he got such responses from black drivers, the reply was 'About 80% of the time.' When the same journalist asked the same question of black cops, the answer was about 30% of the time -- lower, but still an amazing percentage under the circumstances."
-- "Debunking 'Driving While Black' Myth," by Thomas Sowell, Human Events, November 12, 2007, page 16. Address: 1 Massachusetts Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20001. Phone: 202-216-0600. Website.

Quickies "The tax plan that Democrats tout as middle-class tax cut would soon increase taxes for most making less than $75,000 a year, according to a congressional report. About 71 million families in that group will pay $59 billion more in 2011, while 8 million pay nearly $3 billion less and the remaining 4 million pay the same amount as they do now, said the report by the Joint Committee on Taxation (JCT), the tax analysis office for Congress."

Quickies "Sen. Hillary Clinton (D.-N.Y.) recently revealed that her foreign policy would be very much like the failures of President Jimmy Carter, says [writer] Jed Babbin. For example, Clinton, who on more than one occasion embraced the wife of terrorist Yasser Arafat, would push the same ineffective Middle East 'peace process' that Carter pursued."
-- "Hillary Clinton Pushes Carteresque Foreign Policy," by Jed Babbin, Human Events, November 5, 2007, page 7. Address: 1 Massachusetts Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20001. Phone: 202-216-0600. Website.

Quickies "After we got caught in Bill Clinton's trap, we were raked over the coals. All of us -- Juanita [Broaddrick], Gennifer [Flowers], Paula [Jones], Monica [Lewinsky], me -- we have all been through a lot. We were regular women trying to get by when our paths crossed his. Through no fault of our own, we were smeared in the media, terrorized by thugs, audited by the IRS, followed by strangers, victimized by threats. Our homes were broken into, and our pets were killed. And we know that Hillary and her minions were behind the terror."
-- From Kathleen Willey's new book, Target: Caught in the Crosshairs of Bill and Hillary Clinton, as quoted in Culture, etc., The Washington Times National Weekly Edition, November 12, 2007, page 28. Address: 3600 New York Avenue, NE, Washington, DC 20002. E-mail. Website.

Quickies "Judicial Watch named Senator [Harry] Reid one of the 'Ten Most Corrupt Politicians in America' in 2006 for failing to report to the Senate a land deal that netted Reid a nifty $700,000 profit. Reid also accepted more than $30,000 of Abramoff-tainted money allegedly in return for his 'cooperation' in matters related to Nevada Indian gaming."
-- "Of Note," Judicial Watch Verdict, November 2007, page 3. Address: 501 School Street, SW, 5th Floor, Washington, DC 20024. Phone: 202-646-5172. Fax: 202-646-5199. Website.

Quickies "Now the University of Iowa has told professors not to call on students by name, to avoid possible legal violations of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). You read right. According to The Iowa City Press-Citizen: '[C]lass lists and course schedules are not considered . . . public, and therefore must be kept private under FERPA. This means professors aren't supposed to reveal a student's name to third parties, including other students in the same class.' 'After all,' says associate dean Beth Ingram, 'I can see a situation in a large class where calling [students] by name would make them feel uncomfortable.'"
-- "News Digest," The Limbaugh Letter, November 2007, page 4. Address: 1270 Avenue of the Americas, 14th Floor, New York, New York 10020. Show phone: 800-282-2882. Fax: 212-445-3963. E-mail. Website.

Quickies "The Washington Examiner's Bill Sammon reported last week that disgraced former National Security Advisor Sandy Berger is advising Hillary and her campaign. Berger, it should be remembered, stole highly classified terrorism documents from the National Archives, hid them under a trailer outside the Archives, destroyed them, lied to investigators and was subsequently fired from Massachusetts Democratic Sen. John Kerry's presidential campaign in 2004. [. . .] Law professor Jonathan Adler said that 'it shows poor judgment and a lack of regard for Berger's serious misdeeds' and that it is 'simply incomprehensible to me that a serious contender for the presidency would rely upon him as a key foreign policy advisor.'"
-- "Hillary Watch," Human Events, October 15, 2007, page 11. Address: 1 Massachusetts Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20001. Phone: 202-216-0600. Website.

Quickies "[T]he media coverage of the Democratic candidates running for president has been overwhelmingly positive and overwhelmingly extensive. The coverage of the Republican candidates, on the other hand, has been largely minimal and negative. The liberal media are doing all they can to trash Republicans and cheer Democrats. [. . .] Hillary Clinton received the most coverage with 61 stories devoted to her or her campaign. John Edwards got 44 stories and Barack Obama got 41 stories. Moderate Republican John McCain got 31 stories while Al Gore, who isn't even running for president, got 29 stories. [. . .] [N]on-candidate Gore's 29 stories were more than any Republican, except John McCain. Even non-candidate Michael Bloomberg received more attention than many of the announced Republican candidates, such as Sam Brownback, Duncan Hunter, Tom Tancredo, Mike Huckabee and Ron Paul. [. . .] More than 69 percent of the questions to Democrats reflected a liberal premise, and more than 82 percent of the questions to Republicans also reflected a liberal premise. The top Democratic candidates received much more favorable coverage than the top Republican candidates -- a 10-to-1 coverage imbalance in January and 2-1 imbalance in July -- with Clinton tagged as 'unbeatable' and Obama labeled a 'rock star.' Not once did ABC, CBS, or NBC describe Clinton or Edwards as 'liberal.' And ABC labeled Obama 'liberal' only one time. In contrast, the three networks branded Republican frontrunner Rudy Giuliani a 'liberal' no less than 12 times."
-- "ABC, CBS, and NBC Morning Shows Promote LIberal Democratic Presidential Candidates," by Brent Bozell III, Watchdog, October 2007, pages 1-2. Address: Media Research Center, 325 South Patrick Street, Alexandria, Virginia 22314. Phone: 800-672-1423. Website.

Quickies "The falsely accused Duke University lacrosse players are suing the city of Durham and prosecutor Michael Nifong for malicious prosecution, claiming 'one of the most chilling episodes of premeditated police, prosecutorial and scientific misconduct in modern American history.' In fact, their ordeal was nothing out of the ordinary. Few Americans realize how extensively our criminal justice system has been corrupted by leftist ideology. It has now reached the point where the criminals are prosecuting law-abiding citizens."
-- "Leftist Ideologues Have Corrupted U.S. Judicial System," by Stephen Baskerville, Human Events, October 29, 2007, page 21. Address: 1 Massachusetts Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20001. Phone: 202-216-0600. Website.

Quickies "Ford Motor Company has embraced faith in the workplace through the Ford Interfaith Network (FIN), a company-sponsored coalition of eight faiths: Buddhist, Catholic, Evangelical Christian, Hindu, Muslim, Jewish, Orthodox Christian, and Mormon. [. . .] Ford has stepped up to the plate in many ways, including providing prayer and meditation rooms usable by all faiths, and designating certain washrooms to accommodate a post-prayer Muslim cleansing ritual."

Quickies "Shortly after leaving office in 2001, a buoyant [Bill] Clinton confided to an assistant that he had decided on his dream job: secretary-general of the United Nations. [. . .] With no new political realms to conquer in the United States, the lofty post of secretary-general would essentially make him 'president of the work,' his aide noted."
-- "Bill Clinton Still (Very Much) in Power," NewsMax (the magazine), November 2007, page 58. Address: Sequoia Digital Corporation, 224 Datura Street, West Palm Beach, Florida 33401. Website.

Quickies "The traveling [Bill] Clinton gabfest raked in $10.2 million for 57 speeches in 2006 -- up from a very respectable $7.5 million the previous year." [Remember when the media blasted President Reagan for taking $2 million for speeches in Japan after he left office? When their guy pulls down $10.2 million: silence.]

Quickies "For decades, Americans were told that blacks couldn't perform academically unless they attended integrated schools. After the schools were integrated, the lag in black academic achievement was blamed on the hidden 'institutional' racism of white school administrators and faculty. Now that the schools are run by integrated and non-white administrators and faculty, the explanations, excuses, and finger-pointing at whites all seem rather tiresome. Since Asians do as well or better than whites, white racism no longer suffices as an explanation for lack and Latino failure. America's academic elites will have to scratch their heads long and hard to come up with the next round of excuses."

Quickies "Since Hurricane Katrina destroyed much of New Orleans, environmentalists have gone hyperbolic in denying that they prevented the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from reinforcing the city's storm levies. In fact, environmentalists blocked the Army Corps of Engineers' proposed flood gates on Lake Pontchartrain (like those in the Netherlands which protect cities against North Sea storms). Specifically, the Environmental Trust Fund and Save Our Wetlands sought a court injunction against the project in 1977. Then U. S. Attorney General Gerald Gallinghouse went so far as to warn the judge that not building the gates would kill thousands of New Orleans residents. Judge Charles Schwartz issued the injunction anyway, killing the project, along with over a thousand residents of the city 28-years later."

Quickies "[A] number of geologists and planetary scientists [. . .] don't believe oil is a product from the conversion of biotic (once-living) sources, but is an ongoing process occurring continuously deep within our planet [. . .] The conversion of carbon and hydrogen into molecules of various hydrocarbons is thought [. . .] to be possible only at extreme depths, approximately 60 miles -- which is an order of magnitude deeper than present technology can examine directly. Here, according to abiotic theorists, carbon and hydrogen are combined to form methane, which in turn forms the multitude of hydrocarbon chains we know as petroleum. Being lighter than the surrounding rock, the hydrocarbons are buoyed up toward the surface, but are usually stopped by an impenetrable layer we call bedrock. There they may accumulate indefinitely until a fissure occurs, allowing a continuation of their rise toward the surface where they then often pool in sedimentary rock. [. . .] If petroleum, a so-called fossil fuel, was constituted entirely of unfortunate dinosaurs, it would take 200 billion Tyrannosaurus Rexes [. . .] to produce enough carbon to equal known petroleum reserves -- which stand at about 2 trillion barrels."

Quickies "When California homeschooler Evan O'Dorney, 13 won the National Spelling Bee on [May 31], the New York Times reacted with a yawn. Instead of focusing on the winner, the New York Times ran a story about an immigrant from India who lost in the second round of the competition. That boy, Kunal Sah, 12, who is living in Utah, had hoped a victory would secure his family's legal status in the United States. Thus, the Times managed to use the National Spelling Bee as one more forum for pushing the plight of immigrants. [. . .] CBS' The Early Show's Russ Mitchell interviewed Evan and his parents, but home schooling never came up. Same with Al Roker's and Meredith Vieira's interview with the family on NBC's 'The Today Show'."

Quickies "At least one thing is clear. World War II was the last time the whole United States fully committed itself to anything. The whole country went to war, not just a comparative few pushed into combat as a token for the rest of us. On D-Day, stores closed so we could pray for those in combat. By contrast, our current White House reacted to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, by telling us to go and shop as a demonstration of our stern resolve that we were going to maintain the American way of life."
